SOUND DESIGN FOR FILM CLASS, FILM NORTH
Another Sound Design for Film class in the books. Thanks to Film North for having us!
In Sound Design for Film, I ask students to explore such questions as: What roles(s) does sound play in film? How does sound facilitate storytelling, establish mood, help in worldbuilding, and create meaning? Focus is on practice, with a smattering of theory here and there.
We discuss the standard elements integrated into film sound: dialogue (production sound, ADR, walla, “futzed” dialogue), FX (standard sound effects vs. Foley), backgrounds, and music (both score and “in-scene” music). We explore how these elements operate and interact. Students have the opportunity for hands-on ADR and Foley sessions, and to create their own soundscapes using sample footage I provide.
I’m already plotting the curriculum for next year. Sign up for Film North’s email list or monitor their posts for more info. Please join us!
