Do I know anyone in Santa Cruz? I doubt it. But if I’m mistaken, be advised that Natalie Peracchio’s new short film “The Story of the Cricket Queen”, featuring original music, sound design and mix by yours truly, screens this coming Thursday and Friday at the Santa Cruz Film Festival as part of their Avant-Garde and Expanded Shorts program. I’ll post the trailer below.

The director describes "The Story of the Cricket Queen" as "a survey of digital culture seen through the lens of someone who is both a participant and an observer. The film engages with the slippery morality of online voyeurism and performance, using the filmmaker as the subject but also turning the camera on strangers, celebrities, and inanimate but still human figures."

This project was a wild and woolly journey, as Peracchio gave me the notion of ASMR audio as a springboard and cut me loose to explore the intersection between that multiverse of sensibilities and the disheveled chaos of her own visual aesthetic, which this time consists of Super 8 footage with overlaid hand-drawn animation. I teased out the nuances of sonic intimacy wherever I could find them, eventually recruiting my cats to vocalize profusely and loudly chew their dinner in service of the project as well.

I’m looking forward to everyone getting the opportunity to check out this project as it makes its way through the festival circuit. Enjoy! Trailer below.
